Have you heard of the “summer slide?” It’s the loss of academic skills and knowledge that can happen over the course of summer vacation, and it affects students from socially and economically challenged households at greater rates than those from more privileged households. Expect More Tehama decided to approach this challenge head-on. They realized that Tehama County had many low- and no-cost summer activities for students and started publishing a simple guide to connect families with fun ways to stay engaged and learn all summer long.
Expect More Tehama gathered community members who organized camps and events to help map activities, discover gaps in what was being offered, and assist with marketing and promotion so all opportunities and activities were full. They also helped sponsor book giveaways, literacy events, and theater and tech camps. Expect More Tehama shares information about events, free meal programs, book readings, library events, sports camps, swim lessons, and more on their social media platform and in the guide to get the word out about these summer activities.
